The Mulmul cotton fabric derived its name Muslin from the city ‘Mosul’ in Iraq, a place where Europeans are said to have first discovered this fabric. The first ever mention of Mulmul fabric is found in the book “The Travels” written by Marco Polo in 1298 approximately. It is widely believed that the Makers or Weavers in Dhaka, Bangladesh, used to make this incredibly fine Mulmul cotton fabric cloth using a technique called the discontinuous weft technique which requires the weaver or the maker of the cloth to work two layers of weft — one as fine as spider’s silk to hold the cloth together and the other forming the pattern. Then, each pattern of motif was worked individually, using fine bamboo sticks to interlace the pattern threads with the warp threads.

Mulmul cotton fabric is considered to be a soft and fine fabric that has a history ranging back to many hundred years ago. It is believed that the Mulmul cotton fabric was introduced and weaved first by the Bengali weavers. The Mulmul cotton fabric is known by various names throughout the world for instance, in Europe it is famous by the name of Muslin fabric and it is noteworthy to know that the commercial viability of this delicate fabric was perhaps established in Europe almost a 1000 years ago. This fact is made out from works of a few ancient Greek and Roman writers who mentioned about “Muslin” in their works.

Mulmul cotton fabric is considered to be so lightweight and delicate that it is sometimes referred to as wonder gossamer or the woven wind. One of the reasons for the high demand and trade of Mulmul Fabric has been its quality of being light and delicate.

The demand and trade of this fine fabric has suffered greatly for about two centuries. After seeing a steep repression in the art of weaving of this fabric, the Mulmul cotton fabric has over the years seen a great recognition and demand. The super-soft and breathable Mulmul cotton fabric is great for sultry summer, as it has the properties to readily absorb moisture and keep the wearer cool and comfortable in the summers. Another benefit of Mulmul cotton fabric is that it can be dyed easily. These qualities of Mulmul cotton fabric makes it first choice of every fashion lover.
